Research the movement of people into and away from the local community. Students can mark on a map or globe where their parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents were born. Look up the origins of their surnames, and research the headstones in the local cemetery. Use online census records to see where people were born.
The information gathered can then be used to write and record stories about the people involved, where they were from, where they went etc. Students could add music from different countries or cultures to go with the stories.
