Story Picture

Students could collect images and sounds of local wildlife, and then locate the media in the places where they were found.

They can then build up a 'mapping' of what other students can expect to see when they go to the same spaces. This can stimulate discussion about ways of making the school grounds more wildlife-friendly. If your school has an ecology group then they could be the starting point.

Teachers or older pupils can create local wildlife mediascapes for younger children to explore, and while they are exploring they could log the data they find. For example, they could make a note of whether they find the same flora/fauna, or traces of it, what the weather conditions were, the time of day etc. This mediascape can be used in conjunction with other data-collection equipment.
